Anglers unfamiliar with local waters should consider hiring a professional fishing guide in order to get the action going quickly. Certainly we can provide many excellent recommendations in the immediate area. And don't think that the best fishing is only during the summer and early fall. The photo above shows Dr Wiley with a local guide in Mid-November 2008 with a nice morning's catch of yellowtail snapper. Great fishing can be found in Islamorada year round.
Offshore sport fishing aboard your private boat using a local experienced captain can be arranged as well.
The Florida Keys, and this certainly includes Islamorada, are often referred to as, “The Sport Fishing Capital of the World”. While they certainly have earned that distinction, they offer two distinctly different types of fishing.
Reef fishing includes snapper, grouper, mackerel, amberjack, and several species of sharks. Further offshore into the Atlantic Ocean’s famed Gulf Stream, anglers find such pelagic species as dolphin, (mahi-mahi!), wahoo, blackfin tuna, sailfish, blue marlin and white marlin. And then there’s what we call "Flats" fishing or sight fishing for bonefish, tarpon, permit and other prized game fish.
In the backcountry, beautiful and panoramic views can be had along with excellent angling opportunities for bonefish, tarpon, permit, mangrove snapper, snook, Spanish mackerel, redfish, speckled trout, cobia, sharks and many additional species.
Florida Saltwater Recreational Fishing Licenses and information are readily available at most stores, bait shops, and marinas. Persons under the age of 16 are not required to have a Florida fishing license, but must carry proof of their age. A 24/7 toll-free number is available in order to purchase a Florida fishing license ( 1-888-FISHFLORIDA or 1-888-347-4356 ). You may prefer to log onto the official website of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at myfwc.com.
Lobster season is always a popular activity in the Keys! The spiny lobster regular season runs from August 6 to March 31. You will need a Florida fishing license along with a crawfish endorsement and a measuring device. You should review the state lobster regulations at www.myfwc.com/marine/lobster.htm. For additional information about no-take areas in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, call 305-743-2427 or visit floridakeys.noaa.gov.
The Florida Keys are also well-known for their wonderful SCUBA diving! SNUBA, nitrox diving, snorkeling, and underwater photography are also popular activities. Only three miles offshore, the only major living coral reef in the continental United States is home to an amazing array of exotic tropical marine life.
Offshore from Key Largo is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, America’s first underwater state park. This famed park contains the famed submerged statue, “Christ of the Abyss.” At 178 nautical square miles, the park offers glass bottom boat tours, SCUBA diving, snorkel tours, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, nature trails, and a Visitor Center with numerous beautiful aquariums. Shallow diving, deep diving, and wreck diving from Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine and down to Key West, the Florida Keys has it all.
Or you might explore Looe Key, which is not an island at all, but a submerged U-shaped reef with varying depths about five nautical miles offshore from Big Pine Key.
We can recommend the professional dive facilities – including diving instructors, dive guides, and SCUBA classes – to best fit your needs. Private SCUBA guides, private snorkeling guides, SCUBA instruction, and dive equipment rental are available.
These tranquil aquamarine waters are also ideally suited for guided eco-tours, private kayak tours, private canoe tours or private jet ski tours from your property’s waterfront. Kayak rentals, canoe rentals, and jet ski rentals also awaits you.
Or try parasailing, if you'd like to soar above it all.
Maybe sailing is a favorite activity. The Florida Keys are just right for a champagne sunset cruise, sailing charter, sailboat rental, or an unforgettable sunset cruise aboard one of Key West’s tall ships or schooners.
Pick-up or delivery of your personal boat or watercraft, yacht or boat rentals, can be arranged. Numerous marina services are available throughout the Keys.
Windsurfing and kite surfing rank high on these calm waters. Windsurfing equipment rentals and windsurfing instruction await.
And certainly no trip would be complete unless you swim with the dolphins. These friendly, intelligent and intuitive mammals may be just the encounter you were hoping to find! For those who don’t quite want to jump in just yet, the Florida Keys offer delightful dolphin and sea lion shows.
